MySQL: Open Source Database Software

MySQL is an open source database that is pronounced as my-S-Q-L and sometimes unofficially referred to as “My sequel). SQL is an acronym that stands for structured query language. According to their website, many of the fastest growing and world’s largest companies are powered by MySQL like Zappos, Alcatel-Lucent, Adobe, Google, and Facebook. Through this free database software, companies can save money and time powering their packaged software, business-critical systems, and high-volume Web sites.

MySQL also offers a free database through its MySQL community edition. Here are some benefits for incorporating MySQL into your online business:

  • Inexpensive – you can download a free version of MySQL from their site and for Netware 6.5 purchases MySQL is included for free.
  • Supports several development interfaces – and these include Perl, PHP, ODBC, and JDBC which allows you to make database solutions that can run on a variety of platforms.
  • Scalability – through this open source database software, it can handle any amount of data, as much as 50 million rows or more. The default size limit for MySQL is 4GB, but it has a theoretical limit of 8 TB.
  • Fast – when it comes to digital businesses, speed is important, especially when talking about huge websites. With MySQL speed is not sacrificed.
